Powell set for first runners from new Lambourn yard

Brendan Powell is due to have his first runners on Friday since making the short move to Frenchman's Lodge.

Powell, who has been based at Newlands since 2006, will saddle Sparky Jack at Newbury (2.20pm).

Powell's daughter Jenny takes the ride on the two-year-old Sparky Jack.

On what will be a very busy and emotional day, Powell also sends stable legend Morestead to Fontwell for his farewell race - named in his honour.

The Morestead Retirement Handicap Chase (3.45pm) will be run over a distance of two-and-a-quarter miles and the 10-year-old faces six rivals.

Powell told www.cdhorseracingtours.com: "Morestead is an old star, he's been very good to us and we've had some great days. He probably should have won more races and tends to look after himself, but I guess that's really why he has enjoyed so much racing and lasted so long.

He added: "Friday marks his 50th race around Fontwell and he loves the place - let's see what happens. We all wish him a long and happy retirement."

Morestead won his first race in 2008 when AP McCoy made all day that day at Fontwell, on Friday Powell's son Brendan will get the leg-up at the West Sussex track.

Morestead's owner Les Gilbert also runs his newcomer Georgies Pip in the concluding Jan Gilbert 37th?? Birthday Standard Open NH Flat Race (4.20pm), named to celebrate his wife's birthday. Coincidently Powell also sent out his first ever winner as a trainer for the couple.

On Saturday Powell runs the JP McManus-owned Lettheriverrundry at Ayr (5.30pm), unbeaten after making a successful start at Towcester in November and will have McCoy in the saddle.

Powell concluded: "It's a hot Bumper and all the big yards are there, he's a big horse at 17 hands and will probably have a break after this and go back to JP's for the summer. AP will take the ride, but on paper it looks very competitive."
